Total budget: $414,873. Youngmee Kim is Principal Investigator. Abstract: In recent years, evidence has accumulated that the family caregiver’s quality of life is often significantly impaired by their relative’s cancer. Almost all research to date on this subject has been focused on the relatively short period after the cancer diagnosis and treatment. The family caregiver’s long-term adjustment to the caregiving experience, however, remains unknown. Thus, this project will address this question by assessing the quality of life of family caregivers who participated in the baseline assessment of American Cancer Society’s Quality of Life Survey for Caregivers (2 years after the patient’s diagnosis), and are now 5 years post-diagnosis. This project (a) will utilize a longitudinal study design, to examine the long-term effect of cancer diagnosis and treatment on the family caregiver’s quality of life, (b) will document the prevalence of active care at 5 years post-diagnosis and identify psychosocial factors related to the caregiver’s quality of life, and (c) will investigate the impact of caregiving experiences on bereavement outcomes. In this project, three surveys will be developed to achieve each of these three goals. Findings from this project will have significant implications for identification of cancer caregivers who are at risk of experiencing poor quality of life or severe grieving beyond normal levels, and also identification of those who are at risk of disengaging from cancer preventive behaviors, such as healthy diet, exercise, and cancer screening. Given the importance of cancer prevention and early detection preventing and surviving cancer, the results of this project will provide key knowledge in understanding various aspects of quality of life, including the psychological and physical impact of caregiving as well as the behavioral adjustment of cancer caregivers.
